Supporting a Loved One with a Spinal Cord Injury

Writer: BACKBONESBACKBONES

When a loved one sustains a spinal cord injury, it’s natural to feel uncertain about what to say or do. The most important thing is to show them that you’re there for them—let them know you care and love them, no matter what. It’s okay not to have all the answers or to feel uneasy or worried.

If your loved one is dealing with a spinal cord injury, be mindful of your words. Phrases like “everything will work out” might feel frustrating to someone adjusting to life with an injury. Instead, focus on showing up for them—visit often and prioritize spending time together. This may be difficult at times, as we all juggle our own responsibilities, but your presence can make all the difference. The sacrifices made by family and friends are incredibly valuable during this time. When your loved one returns home from the hospital and starts adjusting to a new way of life, any support—whether it’s helping with daily tasks or offering financial assistance—will have a meaningful impact.

It’s also essential to take care of yourself during this journey. Your well-being matters, and taking care of yourself is the best way to ensure you’re able to provide the care and support your loved one needs. Prioritize rest, nutrition, and mental health. This process isn’t a brief chapter, so it’s important to create long-term habits that help you stay healthy. While there will be challenges and adjustments along the way, your relationship with your loved one will only grow stronger through your continued care and support.
